Gary Hart

Gary Hart is Wirth Chair in the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado. He is also a former U.S. senator (D-Colo.) and presidential candidate. Hart has served as an appellate attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice and as senior counsel to one of America's oldest international law firms, Coudert Brothers, where he helped pioneer the development of joint business ventures in Russia and Central Europe. An expert on national security, Hart co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security/ 21st Century, which issued three reports forecasting the age of terrorism and outlined a new, post-Cold War national security policy. He also chaired the Council on Foreign Relations task force on homeland security, which released the report "America: Still Unprepared, Still in Danger." Hart is the author of more than a dozen books, including his most recent, The Shield and the Cloak: The Security of the Commons. He received law and divinity degrees from Yale University and a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.
