Richard Meserve
President, Carnegie Institution; Former Chairman, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Richard Meserve is President of the Carnegie Institution for Science. He served as chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) under Presidents Clinton and Bush, and led the NRC's response to the 9/11 attacks. Before joining the NRC, Meserve was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Covington & Burling; he remains senior of counsel to the firm. Early in his career, he served as legal counsel to the president's science advisor, and was a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun and to Judge Benjamin Kaplan of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He received a bachelor's degree from Tufts University, a J.D. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University.
