Mark Thompson
Director-General, British Broadcasting Company (BBC)
Mark Thompson is Director-General of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC), a position he has held since 2004. In that capacity he also serves as chief executive and editor-in-chief of the BBC and chair of its Executive Board. Thompson was a major force behind creating the BBC's strategy manifesto for the digital age and its Creative Futures project, a far-reaching editorial blueprint for BBC programming and services to meet changing audience expectations. He has also launched new platform trials in on-demand programming, including the on-line iPlayer and podcasting, as well as mobile and high-definition television. Before assuming his current role, Thompson was chief executive of U.K. broadcaster Channel 4. He had previously worked at the BBC for more than 20 years in various roles, including director of television, director of national and regional broadcasting, controller of BBC-2, head of factual programmes, head of features, editor of BBC-1's current affairs flagship ("Panorama") and editor of BBC-1's "Nine O'Clock News." Thompson was educated at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England, and Merton College at the University of Oxford.
